seti i family tree

Pharaoh Seti I, one of the most remarkable rulers of ancient Egypt, left an indelible mark on the future of this immortal civilization during the prosperous New Kingdom era (1570 – 1050 BC). He was the second pharaoh of the 19th dynasty of the New Kingdom, and his reign lasted between 1294 BC and 1279 BC, for 11-15 years. Seti I was known as the true primal founder of the magnificent and glorious Ramesside dynasty.

Born in Avaris, he was the son of Pharaoh Ramsess I and Queen Stire, and the father of Ramesses II. He is credited with some of the most incredible archaeological monuments in history, including the Mortuary Temple of Seti I, the mythical Temple at Abydos, and the Great Hypostyle Hall. He established his capital in Memphis and launched several successful campaigns across Libya & Levant, establishing Egypt's sovereignty over Syria and Canaan.

Seti I was awarded numerous titles, including Menmaatre, which means "The Justice of Re is Eternal," Seti-Merneptah, which means "The Man of Seth, Beloved of Ptah," and several others. He was known by the Greeks as "Sethos" or "Sethosis."

Seti I was married to Tuya, the daughter of a charioteer military officer named Raia, and they had three children: Ramesses II, Tia, and Henutmire. Ramesses II succeeded his father and married his younger sister, Henutmire, while Tia married a high-ranking civil servant who also bore the name Tia.

There is debate about the duration of Seti I's reign, with some believing it was 11 years and others believing it was 15. He spent most of his reign expanding the territory of the Egyptian empire through military campaigns and victories, which are evidenced in his funerary temple and the temple of Amun in Karnak.

Seti I launched several battles and wars in Libya, Western Asia, and Nubia during the first ten years of his reign, which are depicted across the northern wall of the hypostyle hall of the Karnak temple, as well as in royal stelas. He crushed a rebellion in Nubia and defeated a number of Libyan tribesmen who tried to invade the western border. The first six years of his rule are painted across the outer east and north walls of the great Amun temple in Karnak.

Pharaoh Seti I's legacy has stood the test of time, and he remains one of the most revered figures in ancient Egyptian history.
